Welcome to the EAWOP Virtual one-day Conference

Viral Strain? Working life in the COVID pandemic

27 May 2021

The pandemic has touched almost every aspect of our lives and brought about profound changes in the way we work. But to what extent has the virus strained working life? Or has the viral pandemic forced workplaces to change for the better?

The aim of this one-day conference, organised in collaboration with the British Psychological Society, is to invite leading scholars and practitioners from across the world to provide their insights – derived from research and practice – on how the COVID pandemic has reshaped working lives, the impact of these changes on employees, and how organisations can respond productively to the challenges presented by the pandemic.

While our congress in Glasgow has been postponed to January 2022, this one day event provides an earlier opportunity to share findings and consider the impact of the virus on working lives.

Conference Themes and Keynotes

The conference focuses on three main themes that are widely recognised as being affected by the pandemic and we are delighted to have three leading scholars to provide the keynotes for each theme:

Panel Discussion

Concluding the conference is a panel discussion on what we can learn from the pandemic, the prospects for positive changes arising from the pandemic embedding in policy and practice across Europe, and the role trade unions, governments and organisational psychologists can play in this.

We are delighted to have three discussants with key expertise in these areas:

Professor Frederik Anseel

President of EAWOP

Judith Kirton-Darling

Deputy General Secretary of industriAll Europe

Janine Berg

Senior Economist, International Labour Organisation

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On behalf of EAWOP and the British Psychological Society, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to EAWOP’s first digital congress that will take place on 27 May 2021. The theme of the digital conference is “Viral Strain? Working life during the COVID Pandemic” and reflects the unique circumstances that each of us has been working in, but also in which EAWOP finds itself seeking to organize our next congress. The 2021 digital congress is not intended to replace our normal full-fledged congress. Instead, we are organizing this one-day meeting to reenergize EAWOP connections between members in eager anticipation of our postponed Glasgow Congress. As the world will slowly start to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, with effective vaccines on the horizon, we are confident that we can plan for an in-person congress in Glasgow in January 2022. While we are of course also preparing for potential changes to a virtual format, it could be that for many of us Glasgow 2022 will be the first in-person conference since a very long time. Fingers crossed!

“Viral Strain? Working life during the COVID Pandemic” is a thematic conference devoted to sharing and learning from the exciting and impactful research that many Work and Organizational Psychologists have been doing in the past year on COVID-19 issues. While EAWOP is the leading European organization for evidence-based insights on people, work and organization, we acknowledge that our audience and membership has become global. To this end, the conference will run one long global day to allow members to take part from all over the world. We’re looking forward to seeing you online in May 2021 and hopefully, also in person in January 2022.

Best regards

Frederik Anseel

President of the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology
